India is boasting itself as the emerging economic power and business leaders are pointing to the advantage offered by the “ demographic dividend” of India having greater than 40% of its population as Children compared to the developed world where the population is ageing.
However this assumption will only work if the children are nourished well and devoid of illness since malnutrition and illness in the young will steal their mental power permanently or life. One could easily see why the single most pressing need is addressing the children’s health and welfare that has the greatest potential to determine the future of India.
All of us know there has been tremendous growth in private health care entities that address the needs of the affluent and the foreigners coming from countries with national health care who can afford to pay for on demand surgeries in India. These services are offered by private for profit “outfits” in the name of “ Medical Tourism”. It is natural, the entrepreneurs and businesses gravitate to where the money is!
But who would care for the vast majority of children who suffer from malnutrition and die of simple preventable diseases like diarrhea, pneumonia and perinatal and neonatal complications due to unavailability of timely help. Going over the national statistics is superfluous to our group since all of us know these facts. So “Pallavaram Children’s Medical Center” was born Our PCMC. |
